INSURANCE FOR YOUR PET

What is pet health insurance?

Pet health insurance helps cover your pet’s medical expenses. It can give you peace of mind when your cat or dog has an injury, is facing a serious health problem, or just goes to the vet for routine wellness care.

What does pet health insurance cover?

Pet health insurance can help cover the costs of unexpected illness or injury. These include:

  • Accidents and treatments for illnesses
  • Cancer and chemotherapy services
  • Surgery, hospitalization and nursing care
  • Laboratory analysis and diagnostic tests, including X-rays and MRI
  • Medicines
  • Alternative therapies such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and holistic and homeopathic medicine.
  • Chronic and recurring conditions, such as allergies, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism

How much does pet insurance cost?

Most pet owners pay between $30 and $50 a month for their pet health plan, depending on your pet’s age, species, breed, and where you live. You may face higher fees if you have a dog or an older or larger pet.

Does my pet need insurance?

Your pet needs to be under the age of 14 to get a new health insurance policy. If your pet is older than that, or has been diagnosed with or displayed symptoms of diabetes, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, or FELV/FIV, an accident-only plan may be a better option. This plan covers:

1. Medical and nursing exams, and specialist fees

2. Laboratory analysis

3. Emergency care and hospitalizations

4. Magnetic resonance imaging, CT scans, x-rays, and ultrasound

5. Acupuncture services, chiropractic fees and holistic medicine

6. Physical therapy, including hydrotherapy

7. Laparoscopy and surgeries, including laser surgery

What is normally not covered?

Pet insurance can provide reliable protection for your beloved pet, but certain expenses are not covered. Some of the most common exclusions are:

• Cosmetic and elective procedures, such as tail plugs, ear clipping, and ear flaking (except when medically necessary)

• Veterinary fees related to pregnancy, breeding and childbirth

• Orthodontic or endodontic procedures, such as root canals or crowns

• Treatment for behavioral problems

• Vitamins, supplements, pet food, and personal care items such as shampoo or ear cleaner • Pre-existing conditions, including any genetic or condition-specific conditions of the race.
